Jul 13, 2016· I think it is pretty obvious to all that a milling attachment for a lathe is a stopgap at best, something to perform occasional light milling if you only have a lathe. IMO a sturdy angle plate is far superior, especially if a shallow V groove is milled (using the lathe) that allows for very fast setups for milling keyways, cross drilling, etc.
Recently I received from Sieg an evaluation sample of a new product: the U1 Vertical & Horizontal mill. Vertical mills, since the 1950's or so, have become much more common than horizontal mills, but it wasn't always that way. The horizontal mill was developed first and for many years was a workhorse machine found in many machine shops.
For intricate parts like that, a milling machine would be required for successful machining. While lathe machines are more limited in use than a milling machine, they are superior for cylindrical parts. While a mill can make the same cuts that a lathe does, it may need multiple setups to create the same part.
