Do you use your milling attachment

Jul 13, 2016· I think it is pretty obvious to all that a milling attachment for a lathe is a stopgap at best, something to perform occasional light milling if you only have a lathe. IMO a sturdy angle plate is far superior, especially if a shallow V groove is milled (using the lathe) that allows for very fast setups for milling keyways, cross drilling, etc.

Review: Sieg U1 Vertical / Horizontal Mill - mini-lathe.com

Recently I received from Sieg an evaluation sample of a new product: the U1 Vertical & Horizontal mill. Vertical mills, since the 1950's or so, have become much more common than horizontal mills, but it wasn't always that way. The horizontal mill was developed first and for many years was a workhorse machine found in many machine shops.

Milling Machines vs. Lathe Machines - In The Loupe

For intricate parts like that, a milling machine would be required for successful machining. While lathe machines are more limited in use than a milling machine, they are superior for cylindrical parts. While a mill can make the same cuts that a lathe does, it may need multiple setups to create the same part.

Horizontal vs. Vertical Mill? - practicalmachinist.com

Jan 23, 2009· My mill is a horizontal that has a small B-port head, mounted on a swing-away arm (to facilitate movement of the head without the strain of lifting and moving it), for vertical milling when a drilling/boring job needs doing. In use, the vertical head mounts on the overarm.

Using lathe as a milling machine? - practicalmachinist.com

Mar 23, 2008· Old time machinists would frequently mount the compound [top] slide on a angle plate for the vertical movement for a milling machine. A separate milling machine is indeed preferable, but a lot of good work has been done with a lathe milling attachment.

Turning on the milling machine | john f's workshop

Turning on the milling machine. In the same way that it is possible to mill on a lathe by using a vertical slide it is possible to use a milling machine to turn. The difference is that one might use the lathe to mill, not because it is done better than on a milling machine but only because the user does not have a milling machine.

Vertical Milling Table – Sherline Products

The 8″ vertical milling table is another method of milling on the Sherline lathe instead of using the vertical milling column. Parts to be machined are mounted to the vertical table. The vertical table is then mounted to the lathe crosslide table and the part is moved past a cutter held in the lathe spindle.

Milling in the Lathe - About Spare Time Labs

Milling in the Lathe. Since I'm not planning on obtaining a mill (at least not in the near furure or until I get a more spacious workshop...), I decided that I'll have to use my larger lathe for any substantial milling work - the Unimat 3 and the small Chinese lathe do have milling pillars, but I can hardly expect them to cope with some of the milling work required for the 3003 loco...

Mar 04, 2004· I have done some searching through the threads on this topic, but didn't isolate anything pertinent. Has anyone out there attempted to use their vertical mill as a "lathe". Presumably, one could hold the cutting tools on the table at various places on the table (at some height above the table). Then hold the stock in a tool holder in the spindle.

Vertical milling slide for lathe | The Hobby-Machinist

Sep 02, 2018· Milling using the lathe requires high rigidity, small cuts and lots of patience. These milling slides are fine if they can be rigidly mounted so that they can support the forces that you will subject them to when making a cut. Most people will give up on the lathe after a while and buy a mill drill which will be more capable and controllable.

Vertical Lathe Machine | Vertical Turning Centers

Fixturing is simplified and clamping forces are greatly reduced. The arrangement minimizes the effect of interrupted cuts compared to horizontal lathes while facilitating part handling and increasing the amount of weight the machine can handle. Vertical turning centers often have a smaller footprint than equivalent horizontal lathes. Read More.
